Internships at ASMA

The American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) has various internships available.

The Media and Communications internship "involves the use of social media tools, including Twitter and Facebook, and will be responsible for monitoring the occurrence of key terms and individuals in the media for updating and promotional purposes." Among other things, the intern will be expected to write "op-ed’s and opinion pieces on contemporary social issues, relating to Islam and America."

The Office of the Development and Fundraising internship, on the other hand, "involves research, writing, database maintenance, and general administrative duties."  Specific writing duties include:

  • Creating and updating donor and prospect profiles. 
  • Drafting inquiry letters, acknowledgement letters, newsletter copy, and other donor correspondence.

Research Intern Needed at the AIC

The American Islamic Congress (AIC) seeks an intern to assist in researching the current political climate in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly the events of the "Arab Spring", as well as editing and helping to write a chapter for an upcoming anthology on current Middle East issues.

Candidates should have experience in research and an interest in writing/journalism.

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Arabic preferable
  • Knowledge of Middle Eastern culture, politics, and religion
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Background in Political Science, International Relations, Journalism, History or related field

The New York-based American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) is currently offering a Research and Writing Internship.

General Requirements:
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Friendly demeanor & pleasant phone voice
  • Patience and good listening skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and email
  • Proficient in MAC and PC computers 
  • General knowledge about substance abuse, addiction and/or recovery 
Also:
  • Middle East/Islamic/Women’s studies concentration preferred
  • Strong interest in non-profit work, Islam, gender justice and women’s empowerment
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, steady, dependable, and energetic
  • Culturally sensitive and aware; ability to work in international, culturally diverse environment

Women and Islam Research & Writing Interns

WISE, the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality, is seeking research and writing interns to work on creating content for their web portal. Areas of focus include, but not limited to: Muslim women leaders past and present; contemporary Muslim women artists from all over the world; Muslim women’s activism past and present; women hadith scholars, jurists, mufftiyahs; historical and contemporary case studies of Muslim women creating positive social change in their communities; current issues (i.e. FGC, domestic violence, religious and political authority, marriage and divorce, etc.) affecting Muslim women worldwide; grassroots organizations and campaigns working on these issues.

This is an unpaid internship opportunity.

Elan Magazine is in need of a freelance fashion research editor to work from home.

Key responsibilities include:

Illume Magazine has an immediate opening for a general assistant/editor, someone proficient with the English language and knowledge of current events is a must. Candidate must have some experience writing and copyediting for print and digital media and be willing to devote at least 20 hours a month to the magazine. Sales, promotions and marketing a plus.
