The Qur'an Project

I just came across The Qur'an Project, a website which provides a number of free downloads that are sure to come in handy when writing on Islamic topics. First, there is the Saheeh International translation of the Qur'an, which is the preferred translation to use when writing articles for Al Jumuah Magazine. There are also a number of books, including Fiqh As-Sunnah, The Sealed Nectar, Great Women of Islam and other useful titles.

The Qur'an Project is a registered charity in the UK that also provides free English-language translations of the Qur'an to interested non-Muslims.

Manchester Muslim Writers - More Info.

Back in May, I mentioned a new group for writers in the UK: Manchester Muslim Writers. At that time, I did not know much about the group, but it turns out that the group has a website, located at www.muslimwriters.org.uk. All signs point towards this group being very supportive of Muslim writers, holding workshops and other beneficial events. If you live in the vicinity, it definitely sounds like a great resource for Muslim writers in the UK.

Wanted: Female Fashion-Writer for Muslim Magazine

A blog visitor left the following comment today:
Looking for a female fashion-writer for a Muslim woman's magazine. She can be based anywhere in the world but will need to have a strong know-how of or be able to research the UK fashion scene. She will be required to produce quality write-ups on current fashion trends and focus on the area of style as a whole. She will not be required to supply pictures as they are provided by designers/companies themselves. The ideal candidate is expected to continue on the same lines as the magazine's current style but should be able to make it stronger, more creative and more relevant.

Current style= UK based brands & western attire only (nothing contentious please!).
Please provide a fashion-writing sample of previous work(s) with CV if interested.

Thank you

Blogging for SISTERS Magazine

SISTERS Magazine is seeking bloggers. The initial deadline for this project has already passed, but, from the language used in this announcement posted on Ijtema.net, it seems like there may be more opportunities to blog for SISTERS over the next several months. Since no mention of payment is made, check with the editor for more information.

As I have mentioned before, SISTERS is also seeking writers for the magazine itself. When I wrote that post (more than a year ago), SISTERS was a digital magazine only. Now there is a print edition, too.

You can hear an interview with Naima B. Robert, the editor, over at the Nisaa Podcast site.

I noticed, by the way, that the magazine has a few UK-based job vacancies listed on its site:

Shopping Editor
Advertising Sales Executives

Birmingham Muslim Writers Awards 2009

Last year, I briefly mentioned the Birmingham Muslim Writers Awards, a project that started in 2006 with the goal of highlighting new literary talent in Birmingham, UK. Since then (if I've understood correctly), the project now targets Muslim writers across the UK (not just in Birmingham). The group that runs this project offers awards in several categories, including the following:

Non Fiction
Short Story
Novel
Poetry
Screenplay/Drama
Under 16s
Best Children's Story
Journalism
Academic Writing

The group started accepting entries for 2009 back in June, so check out the new website for details on how to make a submission. Also see the list of winners for 2008. This is a competition open to both published and unpublished writers.

Muslim Women: Tell your Story

Click here and scroll down to the second half of the page to learn more about this oral history project taking place in the UK:

Do you have a story to tell?

Is there information about you and your family’s experiences, in the past, which you would like to pass on to future generations?

Rainbow Lives feels it is very important to have your stories recorded and saved so people can learn today, and future generations can learn about their heritage in years to come.

We would like people to record their stories which can be in their own language and we will archive these important stories for future generations.

These stories will also be transcribed into English so others can learn about your history, customs, songs, poems etc.
