I could not discern who is sponsoring the following competition, but it appears to be based in the United Arab Emirates and open to international participants:

According to the website:

"The Pen Writing Competition is an international short story writing competition designed to find talent within Muslim youth. This competition mainly encourages creativity and an Islamic touch in your stories."

Essay Competition at Monasib Clothing

Monasib Clothing, which offers "modest active wear" for women is holding an essay competition that asks participants to "describe the most eco-friendly and spiritually uplifting lunch break."

According to the website:

The winner "receives a Monasib cotton office shirt as well as a complimentary lunch (for those on the Cape Town area). Out-of-towners will get the garment, but a raincheck on the lunch."

For those who don't know, Cape Town is located in South Africa.

Eid Mubarak to all blog visitors. Unfortunately, I was not able to update the blog during the month of Ramadan. Now that one of my regular clients is a news agency, I had daily deadlines to meet each day of the month and was quite busy. In some parts of the Muslim world, newspapers close down for the Eid and slow down considerably during the month of Ramadan. The fact is, however, that the news does not stop just because a segment of the population is fasting, tired, or otherwise busy - and the world in general keeps on moving. If you are working for non-Muslim clients, they might not be aware of just how tired you are, but you still need to do your best work. What field do you work in, and was your productivity affected in Ramadan? Did you adjust your schedule accordingly? Share in the comments section below!

An Unfortunate Trend

When Sr. Serene of damazine left me a comment to let me know that two magazines on this blog's comprehensive list of Islamic publications were no longer publishing, I thought I'd better do some housecleaning and remove any outdated information. Though Sr. Serene only mentioned two publications, I ended up removing ten and placing them in a separate "No Longer Publishing" category. I was particularly surprised about Muslim Girl and Islamica, two glossy magazines that have been sold in mainstream bookstores and had wide appeal. I am also not finished going through the links and suspect there will be a few more additions to this category by the time I am done.

Having been the managing editor of one of the magazines on the list (Our Rising Star), I can tell you that running a magazine is expensive...more expensive than one might imagine. By far, the biggest expense is printing and mailing. It can also be quite costly to have the magazine professionally designed. Many of the publications that are still printing are newspapers (the paper is cheaper) or websites (no printing costs), are printed outside the U.S. (cheaper printing costs), or have solid funding. Others do not print regularly and only print when enough funds are collected. Naturally, this makes subscribers upset and often contributes to the demise of the publication.

I always feel sad when I see an Islamic publication stop printing. Yes, it's true that there is an abundance of Islamic information on the Internet, but magazines reach different segments of the population and have special value.

Back in September 2007, I mentioned that About.com was in search of guides to various topics, including Moroccan Food and others like Middle East Issues and Arabic Language. This is considered one of the better paying content sites on the Internet as guides receive a monthly stipend of $675 per month for their first two years. Although this is down from $725 (the rate offered back in September 2007), About.com says that:

In addition to a base payment (guaranteed to be $675 per month for Guides in their first two years, with a minimum of $500 per month afterwards), About.com pays Guides by measuring page view growth (month-over-month for Guides in their first year, and year-over-year every year after) with payment incentives for pageview growth. If your page views grow, you will never make less than $675 per month.

And:

On average, a Guide in his or her first two years will make $1,000 a month. The average Guide compensation is around $2,000 a month, and we have Guides who earn more than $100,000 a year.

In any case, I have been meaning for a long time to draw attention to the fact that Sr. Christine Benlafquih, who also writes for Suite101 , became the Moroccan Food Guide at About.com. The recipes on Sr. Christine's Moroccan food site are incredibly detailed and mouth-watering. Some dishes I am thinking of trying are:
